Okay, here’s the challenge. Write a poem about a person focusing on an object connected with that person. For instance, say a favorite aunt had a quilt she always wrapped herself in at night while she sat in her favorite chair, or maybe a scarf that you loved and lost and how you felt when you wore that scarf. Get the jist? Okay, write one and share.
Here’s mine:
Blue Dearfoam Slippers
It’s that plish plish across the tile
that is so familiar,
mom’s house slippers in blue.
they are what she feels most comfortable in
after her feet have been mangled and mishandled
from botched surgeries and too many years in high heels
big toe rising up
she pushed it down to get into her shoes
until finally the toe had to go.
now she cannot wear a flip-flop or
a pretty strappy sandal,
it has to be closed toes for the public,
but when she comes home
she eases into her blue Dearfoam slippers
and goes plish plish across the floor.
