One of my favorite poems of my own is the one I wrote about my dad. It is simply entitled “Father”. In this poem I wanted to portray the whole man, not just the alcoholic. There are so many stereotypes about alcoholics and as I said, I wanted to portray the whole man, not just the drunk. My dad was funny, dark, brilliant and dashing. He died in 1974 when I was 23 from complications due to alcohol. I miss him and I feel like he would be so proud of me to see how far I have come.
From the last stanza of the poem: Paradoxical parent
Mystery within mystery
darkness within darkness
I still look out the corner of my eye
at the car next to me
hoping you’ll be there.
