Who was one of the first poets who really spoke to you? For me it was Maya Angelou and Anne Sexton, especially Anne’s poem “unknown Girl in the Maternity Ward”. I analyzed it for my very first poetry class in community college. Years later when I became a teacher I would use that poem so that my students could identify similes and metaphors. Who inspired you?
Robert Frost, “Choose Something Like A Star:”
“So when at times the mob is swayed
To carry praise or blame too far,
We may choose something like a star
To stay our minds on and be staid.”
